Niacin can be very useful in lowering triglycerides and lowering cholesterol levels. The biggest challenge with taking niacin is the flushing that often accompanies it. Start with one dose at bedtime. If flushing occurs and is intolerable, try taking a baby aspirin, 81 mg, with the niacin or one hour ahead. If flushing continues, it usually only last about two weeks. After that it seems the body often gets used to the product. Check cholesteol levels monthly. The maximum therapeutic dose is 500 mg, three twice a day.Make sure you are supervised by a medical doctor to check for liver toxicity.
